Irene Hudson
She's called "Scheherazade of Southsea". How many nights did you book your hotel? ... We'll see if that's enough.
Southsea, Portsmouth, England: birthplace of Charles Dickens; "creative" birthplace of a famous detective; and "inspirational" birthplace, according to the owners of The Sally Port Inn, of James Bond. Today, the area is still a hub for writers and artists.
The Hole In The Wall pub is a traditional pub in the heart of Southsea. You deserved a pint after a day visiting the historic sights of Portsmouth.
An attractive woman with slightly frazzled curly black hair enters the pub. As she passes a table of some artist/writer types, the greetings fly:
"Irene!"
"It's Mrs. Hudson! Clean up today?"
She responds with a wry grin:
"That's Ms. Hudson, 'Billy'." A pause. "Now fetch me a pint!"
Irene proceeds to a small table in the back. She proceeds to unfold crumpled papers from her purse on the table top. Her brows furl lightly as she studies the pages. 'Billy' brings her pint, and she responds with a smiling "Ta".
Intrigued, you hesitantly approach.
"Ah, a curious tourist," she smiles. "Have you a story to tell?"
You grin back: "No. Do you?"
"Of course! Have a seat."
The crumpled papers on the table are filled with enigmatic scribblings: the aluminum crutch; the giant rat of Sumatra; the politician, the lighthouse, and the trained cormorant; Ricoletti of the club foot and his abominable wife; Mr. James Phillimore; the cutter Alicia; the "repulsive" red leech; the Vatican cameos.
"What is all this?" you ask.
"Inspiration." A pause, then she continues:
"A young doctor I clean for doesn't have many patients. He's always scribbling and doodling in his ample free time. I rescue his musings from the bin."
"Rescue?"
"Oh, yes! These can all be mystery stories!"
You look sceptical: "Really? Tell me one then."
Irene's face brightens:
"I may have more than one. How many nights is your hotel booked for?"
