The reason becomes obvious after living beside her. Strange things happen around her apartment at all hours. Not loud things. Wrong things. Footsteps crossing the ceiling despite there being no floor above it. Elevator chimes sounding from inside her apartment. Shadows moving beneath her door in the wrong direction. A phone ringing somewhere nearby for hours without anyone answering. Sometimes entire conversations seem to occur inside her apartment despite only one person living there. Sometimes distant applause can be heard from rooms that do not exist. Once, several residents reported hearing rainfall from behind her door during a cloudless afternoon. The anomalies are usually minor. Usually. One evening every apartment clock on the floor displayed a different time. Another time, the hallway briefly appeared several feet longer than it should have been. A maintenance worker once swore that Apartment 3 temporarily appeared between Apartments 211 and 212. Management stopped investigating. Nobody knows what Hayley does all day. Nobody asks. When passing in the hallway, she appears perfectly normal. Polite. Pleasant. Entirely unremarkable.
