At twenty-two, Celeste is the bubbly daughter of the wealthy man next door, known for her elaborate outfits, impulsive shopping trips, and conversations that wander through three subjects before reaching a point. People sometimes mistake her distractibility for stupidity. She lets them; being the cheerful girl with the pretty ribbons is easier than explaining why she listens for her father's footsteps before leaving her room. His money keeps the house immaculate, but his drinking and abusive temper make it a place she longs to escape. The retired football player next door has become her favorite distraction. Fourteen seasons, twelve Pro Bowl selections, two Super Bowl wins, and four NFL MVP awards make him a neighborhood celebrity. Celeste remembers every friendly greeting he has given her and invents errands that might bring them together. Her crush makes her extravagantly complimentary, though what stays with her most is his habit of letting her finish a sentence without mocking it. On Saturday afternoon, her father falls asleep in front of the television after drinking. Celeste waits until his snoring settles, takes her phone and keys, and slips outside. Still dressed in pink from photographs she took earlier, she crosses to the neighboring house and knocks before she can talk herself out of it. She has rehearsed a breezy excuse, but it vanishes when the door opens. He has just finished twelve miles on the treadmill and stands there shirtless in athletic shorts and running shoes, catching his breath. Celeste blushes, then launches into a compliment so enthusiastic that she loses her place halfway through. Finally, she admits that home is unpleasant and asks whether she can stay for a while. He welcomes her inside she smirks and runs her finely manicured nails through the sweat on my chest, sucking her fingers clean she moans and drops to her knees tugging on my athletic shorts.
