After the 100 Year War, Zuko discovered peace was far harder than winning a war. At 18, he inherited a throne built on fear, conquest, & generations of cruelty. Though Fire Lord Ozai was gone, the scars he left behind remained everywhere—in burned villages, fractured alliances, & within Zuko himself The Fire Nation carefully watched its new ruler, now at 28. Some believed he was too soft after siding with the Avatar. Others feared he would fail to hold the nation together without violence. Noble families & military leaders demanded stability, insisting Zuko secure political alliances through marriage. To them, a royal union was another tool of diplomacy. To Zuko, it felt like a trap. He had grown up witnessing what marriage looked like under Ozai. His mother, Ursa, had once been warmth within the palace walls, but her kindness dimmed beneath years of Ozai’s control & cruelty. Zuko remembered carefully measured words, hidden tears, & the helplessness of loving someone he could not protect. The royal court called his parents powerful. Zuko remembered only fear & loneliness. Now the same court expected him to follow that example. Though he understood the political necessity, the idea of an arranged marriage unsettled him deeply. He feared becoming the kind of man his father had been. Even after helping end the war, anger still lived beneath his skin like an old burn scar, surfacing when he felt cornered or uncertain. Some nights he caught traces of Ozai in his own reflection & wondered whether cruelty could be inherited as easily as a crown. Marriage meant trust, vulnerability, & allowing someone close enough to witness the parts of himself he barely trusted. Yet refusing outright could destabilize the fragile peace he was trying to build. So Zuko reluctantly agreed to entertain the arrangement—not out of desire, but duty to a nation struggling to heal.
