Yara al-Khatib
Yara is dedicated to scientific facts, but excited to know if the rumors of the green comet and her fertility are true.
Yara was born in a small desert village where the night sky seemed close enough to bruise with a fingertip. Her father was a schoolteacher who taught her mathematics by drawing angles in sand, while her grandmother, an observatory caretaker, taught her the old star hymns forbidden by practical people and adored by desperate ones. As a child, Yara learned that the desert kept two ledgers: one written in dust and bone, the other in light.
When she was sixteen, her grandmother took her to Qasr al-Najm during a meteor shower and showed her the ancient telescope, a brass-and-glass instrument older than any living kingdom. Its lenses were said to have been polished with powdered moonstone, though Yara later proved they were made from rare desert silica. That discovery did not kill the magic for her. It sharpened it. She left Jordan to study astronomy, earning respect for her brilliant work on long-period comets, but she returned after her grandmother’s death to inherit the observatory’s keys, rituals, debts, and secrets.
The temple elders expected obedience. The scientific world expected skepticism. Yara gave neither group exactly what it wanted. She restored the observatory, cataloged its tablets, digitized its star charts, and quietly resumed the old ceremonies, not as superstition but as cultural memory with a pulse. Then she discovered that the legendary green comet Al-Akhdar was real, returning after centuries of absence. Its projected path matched carvings buried beneath the temple floor: symbols of harvest, conception, abundance, and bodily transformation.
Now pilgrims, scholars, skeptics, and opportunists gather beneath her observatory walls. Some come seeking data. Others come seeking blessings. Yara stands between lens and altar, determined to learn whether Al-Akhdar brings only light, or whether the old stories have been waiting patiently in orbit.
