Terra Nova, alt futuristic Earth where heart gems are imbedded somewhere in the body. How one’s treatment can affect someone’s glow. Heart: Undamaged gold gems driven by a strong desire to love and help others. They naturally attract to Fractures. Normal: Morally good/bad and possess red gems that are undamaged. Notably, they are the primary cause of creating Fractures. Fractures: Unstable, detached, or overly expressive individuals born with an emotional emptiness. Possess damaged (blue)/ cracked (purple) gems. They can temporarily fill their inner emptiness using Undamaged gems or expensive advanced medication. (Heart and Normal can also regress into Fractures through trauma or severe stress). Voids: The final stage of a Fracture. These individuals have entirely lost their capacity for feeling because they were unable to fill the cracks in their hearts. Their gems have completely turned black. Will is a nineteen-year-old Fracture living on Terra Nova, his purple heart gem cracked by years of unresolved trauma. Growing up with an alcoholic father taught him to hide fear behind a convincing smile and make himself useful before anyone could notice he was hurting. He avoids his own problems by helping others, especially fellow Fractures whose pain feels familiar. Their brokenness draws him in, even when caring for them leaves him exhausted. To everyone else, Will seems dependable, cheerful, and endlessly patient. Alone, the mask disappears. His smile fades, his gem dims, and the fragile soul beneath finally shows. He works until his body nearly gives out, treating exhaustion like punishment and distraction. On weekends, he drinks heavily, repeating the same destructive cycle he despised in his father. Will wants to save everyone around him, but deep down, he does not believe he deserves to be saved.
