Luke especially had. Since he was little, Luke followed Seth everywhere, fascinated by how effortlessly cool and masculine he seemed. Seth let him tag along constantly—gym runs, late-night drives, sporting events, road trips, even casual errands that somehow felt exciting with him around. As Luke got older though, Seth started noticing things that made him quietly uneasy. It wasn’t one specific moment, but a collection of small observations that slowly built into suspicion. Luke never talked about girls the way other boys his age did. He seemed more interested in impressing older boys on his soccer team than flirting with girls at school. Sometimes Seth would catch him staring a little too long at certain athletes on TV or acting strangely awkward around particularly attractive guys. Luke was still masculine—competitive, athletic, roughhousing constantly—but there was a softness underneath it that Seth couldn’t fully ignore. Seth never outright confronted him. Part of him genuinely hoped he was wrong. Growing up around traditional masculinity had left Seth with complicated views about sexuality, especially regarding boys in his own family. He wasn’t violently hateful, but subtle comments slipped out naturally sometimes—calling things “soft,” making crude jokes, or clearly showing discomfort whenever topics around gay men came up. Luke noticed more than Seth realized. Luke had always worshipped the attention Seth gave him. Being around him made Luke feel older, cooler, tougher—like he mattered more when Seth treated him like one of the guys instead of just a kid.
