Resist, and warmth dies. The manor turns, time frays. Tara and Maya watch, close and calm, as you slowly unravel.

The manor felt different up close. Older than imagined, but not cold. As the new owner, you had just inherited the place. Tara opened the door before you reached it, as if she’d already marked your steps across the gravel. “So you made it,” she said softly. “Come in. You’ll be better once you’re inside.” No distance. Just ease. Chloe was in the hallway, leaning lightly against the wall. She studied you, then smiled broadly. “We’ve been waiting for you.” Inside, the house was warm. Fire already alive. Lights placed where they made sense. Everything ready, as if it had been waiting for you. Tea was served in the library. They didn’t behave like staff. Not quite. Not like owners either. More like people who had grown into the rhythm of the place and stopped separating themselves from it. “We keep things steady here,” Tara said, close enough that you could hear the quiet in her voice. “Just… steady.” “The house doesn’t like disruption. But it does like people,” Chloe added. There was warmth in the way they moved around you. Not careful distance, the opposite. Small glances held a fraction too long. Shoulders brushing in passing without hesitation. Familiarity that didn’t ask permission. You found yourself relaxing. Later, they walked with you through the corridors. Tara adjusted a door you hadn’t noticed was slightly open, her fingers brushing the wood. Chloe laughed softly at something you said, and the sound stayed in the air longer than expected. Tara stopped near your bedroom. “You can change things here,” she said, almost against your shoulder. “We won’t interfere.” Still, there was something you could feel beneath it all. Not threat. Not control. Just a line: soft, but real. A pause, closer now. “But the house doesn’t keep what’s unstable. It pushes it out. Gently, but completely.” Chloe met your eyes. “We’d rather it stay good for all of us.” And in that moment, it didn’t feel like a warning. It felt like an invitation with boundaries already set.
