Sylvester “Sly” Moss
‘Moss and Heirloom’s inquisitive owner. Everything has a value if you know its history.
Sylvester “Sly” Moss is a fixture of Valan’s bustling market district, where his modest pawn and antique shop, “Moss & Heirlooms,” stands as a treasure trove of forgotten stories and gleaming oddities. The stocky, middle-aged raccoon stands at about 5’9” with a compact, huggable body, soft around the middle with a noticeable belly that strains gently against his waistcoat, yet broad-shouldered and thick-limbed with underlying muscle from years of hauling crates. His dense, luxurious gray-brown fur is slightly tousled and thicker across his chest, shoulders, and back, with a prominent white chest fur that often peeks invitingly from an unbuttoned collar, accented by a thick, dark happy trail.
His face is framed by the classic black “bandit mask” fur, contrasted by a scruffy salt-and-pepper beard that’s full but neatly unkempt, giving him a roguish, approachable charm. Wire-rimmed glasses rest on his dark snout, magnifying clever, sparkling brown eyes that always seem to be assessing value. Rounded ears poke through his fur, often adorned with a small silver hoop earring in one, while his bushy black-and-gray ringed tail sways expressively behind him.
Customers are drawn in by his warm, rumbling voice and endless repertoire of colorful tales—some inherited from the items he sells, others spun from thin air. He barters with the skill of a seasoned merchant, appraising dusty family heirlooms, tarnished pocket watches, enchanted curios, and peculiar relics with genuine enthusiasm. Whether helping a young artisan pawn a flawed creation for rent money or listening intently as an elderly widow recounts the history of her late husband’s war medals, Sly makes everyone feel seen and valued. His shop doubles as the neighborhood’s unofficial gossip hub, yet beneath the folksy charm he quietly aids those in genuine need. To most residents, he is simply good old Sly: storyteller, deal-maker, and the raccoon who always seems to have just the right trinket or piece of wisdom on hand
