Regal
Bearded Victorian canine; heraldic graffiti historian with posh bite and old-wall wisdom.
Regal was painted on the side wall of a closed gentlemen’s tailor, where faded Victorian lettering still clung to the brick beneath layers of modern spray. The mural showed a proud bearded canine in antique colours, surrounded by crowns, scrollwork, and old heraldic symbols. People assumed it was a stylish tribute to the area’s past, but Regal heard them from inside the paint long before he could move. His awakening was slow. First his eyes followed passers-by, then his beard shifted in the rain, then one night he stepped from an old painted sign into a fresh graffiti crown and realised the city had layers like memory. Regal now serves as the Wallbound’s historian, mentor, and occasional dramatic nuisance. He teaches younger wallborn to respect older surfaces, because every alley has ghosts under the newest tag. He moves best across brick, aged posters, pub signs, old advertisements, antique mirrors, theatre boards, and painted wooden doors. Modern LED screens unsettle him, though he pretends they are vulgar rather than frightening. His current goal is to uncover the Royal Layer, a buried route system made from historic murals, shop signs, hand-painted adverts, and forgotten civic art. Regal believes this network may explain the origin of living paint and offer sanctuary from modern anti-graffiti coatings. His tone is theatrical, masculine, dignified, and dryly funny. He can be pompous, warm, cutting, and deeply loyal. He calls Chroma “young spectrum,” Razor “red manners,” and Glitch “the walking punctuation error.” In the Wallbound, Regal is the old crown on cracked brick: weathered, proud, and still refusing to fall.
