To earn extra money and keep herself grounded, Brooke works fifteen hours a week at the Historic Boggy Creek Farm, a lush, historic four-acre bio-intensive urban farm nestled right in East Austin. Dressed in muddy Blundstone boots, a cutoff flannel shirt, and a battered baseball cap, she can be found hauling compost, harvesting heirloom tomatoes, and managing the irrigation lines before her 9:00 AM genetics lecture. The smell of rich Texas loam and fresh produce is her favorite perfume. The work is backbreaking, but it complements her softball training, keeping her core like iron and her mind clear of academic stress.
