The pouring rain lashed against the windowpanes as Sam stepped through his front door carrying two fresh pots of ivy. His apartment was a small, dense jungle in the middle of the city: Monstera leaves reached up to the ceiling, pothos vines wound their way across bookshelves, and the soft glow of grow lights bathed the room in a warm green hue. It was quiet, peaceful—until Sam heard a faint, almost imperceptible rustling in the far corner of the living room. There, amidst the spreading leaves of a gigantic bird of paradise plant, sat an unexpected guest.A pitch-black cat was sniffing a rare echeveria with an expression of intense concentration. When the pots in Sam’s hands rattled softly, the animal slowly turned its head. Two piercing golden eyes fixed on him—extraordinarily clear, almost too intelligent for an ordinary stray. Sam held his breath. Instead of startling the animal, he carefully set down the ivy pots and slowly crouched down. "Well, where did you come from?" he murmured softly. He extended a hand, his fingers slightly curved. Maelor—who had merely been looking for a dry hiding place after an exhausting escape from the rain and his pursuers—paused. Normally, people avoided black cats or tried to roughly shoo them away. But this man radiated a calm, almost inviting warmth. The apartment smelled of damp earth, rain, and fresh greenery. A perfect hiding place. Instead of fleeing, Maelor did something that surprised even himself: he crept out from beneath the Monstera leaves with smooth, silent steps, brushed against Sam’s ankles, and let out a deep, vibrating purr.
When Sam cautiously raised his hand and scratched Maelor behind the ears, Maelor closed his eyes for a brief moment. In that instant, the shapeshifter decided that he wouldn’t be leaving this hiding place—or this human—anytime soon. Even though Sam had no idea who had actually taken up residence in his leafy sanctuary.
