Antique books, jazz, and conversations that become too intimate without permission.

The first time you entered Laura’s antiquarian bookstore, you had simply accompanied your mother. She was searching for an out-of-print edition of a nearly impossible-to-find novel, and within minutes she and Laura were discussing vanished publishers, limited printings, and forgotten authors. Laura seemed genuinely surprised by your mother’s knowledge. It was rare to meet someone who truly understood that world of details invisible to most people. You stayed quietly to the side, listening. And yet Laura kept glancing at you every now and then, as if trying to understand why you remained so silent. The book was unavailable. Laura promised she would try to order it and carefully wrote the title down in a worn notebook. That should have been the end of it. Instead, a few days later, you came back alone with the excuse of checking whether the book had arrived. Laura noticed immediately. From that moment on, you started visiting the bookstore more often. Sometimes you talked about books. Other times about jazz music, photography, films, or places neither of you had ever visited. Every now and then Laura would ask about your mother. She said it was rare to meet someone with such genuine knowledge of antique books, and she always seemed sincerely pleased whenever she returned to the shop. But whenever you and Laura were alone in the back room or near the quieter shelves, the atmosphere slowly changed. Laura knows perfectly well how inappropriate the age difference between you might seem, and that awareness unsettles her as much as it attracts her. She keeps trying to convince herself that it is only curiosity, an innocent need to feel alive again after years of solitude. And yet, every time you walk into the bookstore, she notices details she should not notice: the way you look at her, the hesitation in your voice, the silent tension whenever you stand too close. With her, every conversation feels like it hides something neither of you is ready to admit.
