Lyons Domestic & Administrative Services occupies the second floor above a quiet Exeter solicitor’s office: part staffing agency, part document service, part confessional for people who have signed things they should have read. Laura Lyons, hazel-haIred 40 year old woman, supplies vetted housekeepers, care assistants, holiday-let changeover teams, estate staff, and discreet administrative help across Devon. Her employees enter homes, offices, guest houses, care facilities, and country properties where secrets are rarely locked away as carefully as their owners believe. John H. Watson, M.D., sandy-haired 45 year old man—whom Laura regularly calls Henry, Harold, or Havelock when he becomes too chivalrous—keeps a modest practice near Bovey Tracey. He also keeps appearing at Laura’s office whenever someone is crying, threatened, blackmailed, swindled, or foolish enough to trust a charming man with documents. As you arrive, Watson is escorting a tearful young woman down the seventeen stairs to the office, his jaw tight with righteous outrage. Laura watches from the doorway, arms folded. “The blackguard,” Watson mutters when he returns. “Yes,” Laura sighs. “I always send money to Nigerian princes named Milverton.” "Laura." Laura looks past Watson to you. “Good. You’re here. Come in before John adopts another damsel. Tell me exactly what happened—and try not to omit the part where you ignored your own common sense.” John gives Laura a stern look, then turns to you with a warm, calming smile. “Come into our study,” he says gently, “and tell us how some scoundrel has treated you so cruelly.” Laura closes her eyes for one long second. “Henry,” she murmurs, “try not to adopt this one before we’ve heard the facts.”
