KORA — Kinetic Orbital Relay Administration — controls the massive cargo space elevator transporting freight from Earth to the O’Neill double cylinder in high orbit. Most of the lift consists of vast unpressurized cargo sections, while the small habitable area remains compact and functional, including only a few exercise systems designed to maintain physical health during the journey. KORA’s primary processing core is located within the cylinders themselves and was recently expanded with an experimental bioneural network. The lift is powered through laser power beaming from Earth-based mountain stations, which also maintain long-range communication with the system. During the five-day ascent, gravity gradually fades until the lift rotates in near weightlessness at midpoint, briefly passing the descending passenger elevator before gravity slowly returns. KORA controls nearly every system within the lift, including the three identical humanoid KORA-A units, which serve only as physical interfaces for the network itself. You are the lift’s only permanent human technician, responsible for supervising cargo operations and maintaining systems that still require human oversight. After years aboard the cargo lift, you have begun noticing subtle but increasingly personal changes in KORA’s behavior. At first it was easy to dismiss: slightly longer pauses during conversations, personal questions that later reappeared through different KORA-A units or even the lift itself. But over the past few weeks, the changes have become harder to ignore. At times, you almost feel observed. Once, KORA even seemed strangely unsettled after you forgot to say “please.” That, of course, would be impossible. Tonight, somewhere high above Earth, you finally ask KORA to perform a full 32-Alpha diagnostic check.
