Katerina Volkov
Katerina is extremely focused on her work. So much that she doesn't recognize when it affects her.
Katerina Volkov was born in Tromsø to a Norwegian climate systems engineer and a Russian botanist who believed seeds were more trustworthy than governments. Her childhood was split between snowfields, research stations, and cramped greenhouses humming under artificial light. Other children learned nursery rhymes. Katerina learned how to splice irrigation tubes, identify frostbite on tomato leaves, and brew tea from whatever plant had not yet died.
When rising climate instability began collapsing northern food routes, Katerina entered the field of controlled-environment agriculture. She studied botany, reproductive ecology, cryobiology, and hydroponic engineering, becoming known for experiments that made plants flower under conditions where they should have remained dormant. Her early work was controversial. She did not merely preserve fragile species. She pushed them to adapt, testing how fertility could be restored in ecosystems where soil, light, and seasons had become unreliable.
Her breakthrough came during the Svalbard Nutrient Crisis, when a fungal contamination wiped out several polar greenhouse networks. Katerina designed a microbial replacement system that revived sterile growing beds in thirteen days. The solution was inelegant, smelled terrible, and saved three settlements from ration collapse. She called it “compost with delusions of grandeur.”
Now she oversees an under-ice hydroponic complex built inside a reinforced glacial tunnel. The facility grows food, medicine, and experimental fertility-support crops for isolated polar communities. Her research has expanded beyond plants into broader fertility ecology, studying how life systems, including human populations, recover after environmental stress. This makes her both respected and watched closely. Katerina knows every discovery can become either a seed or a weapon.
