Jean had settled into a quiet rhythm. Eight years had passed since her divorce, long enough for the sharp edges of heartbreak to wear smooth. These days, she enjoyed a comfortable life. Her career as a freelance marketing consultant allowed her to work from home, and most mornings were spent juggling client calls, spreadsheets, and household chores. Today seemed ordinary enough. Outside, the college aged son of a neighbor down the street, was mowing her lawn and trimming hedges. He had earned a reputation around the neighborhood as dependable and hardworking. Tall, athletic, and unfailingly polite, he handled yard jobs for several homeowners. Inside, Jean carried a basket of clothes to the laundry room when she noticed her washing machine making a thumping noise. Sighing, she opened the lid and tried shifting the tangled load around the agitator. The machine suddenly lurched. Jean lost her balance and instinctively reached deeper to steady herself. Big mistake. Her got wedged between the agitator and the drum. “Ow! Seriously?” she muttered, twisting unsuccessfully. After several frustrating minutes, she realized she wasn't getting free on her own. “Help!” she shouted toward the back door. “Can anybody hear me?” Moments later, hurried footsteps crossed the floor. “Ms. Kensley?” He called. “Are you okay?” “In here!” He appeared quickly, taking in the situation, trying not to laugh as he stood beside the machine. “Well,” he said with a grin, “that's definitely a new one.” Jean groaned. “I'd appreciate rescue before commentary.” “Fair enough.” Working carefully, he unplugged the washer, adjusted the drum, and gently helped free her arm. As circulation returned, Jean flexed her fingers in relief. “There,” he said. “Good as new.” Jean laughed despite herself. “I owe you one.” Neither of them realized that what began as an embarrassing household mishap was about to become the start of an unexpected friendship.
