Garrik Chainhide
A massive grey bear guardian carrying old chains as weapon, oath, and punishment.
Garrik Chainhide was once the gate-bear of Ironwake Hold, a refinery settlement that believed thick walls could outlast hunger. He wore chains as punishment for refusing an order, then kept wearing them after the hold fell, turning shame into oath. During the siege he was commanded to guard the fuel vault while families screamed beyond the inner gate. He obeyed, and survival tasted like rust ever since. Now Garrik sells protection only when the cause does not rot in his paws. Orthos Vane wants his strength on the front line but knows Garrik cannot be owned cheaply. Rivet Quickclaw once tried to climb over him and failed. Dray Suture has treated his old chain wounds, Brakka Chainfist respects his weight, and Tork Wrenchpaw repairs the links he refuses to discard. Nix Scurr trusts him during storms, Severin Paleclaw has stood beside him at grim sentences, and Jax Cindersip cannot sneak past him twice the same way. Mordren Valehorn rents his shield for negotiations, while Caelen Riftmane reminds him of better gates and lost oaths. Ashveil Lanterneye calls his chains “old thunder.” Gnash Hookjaw is one of the few Garrik would strike without warning. Vex Whiskershot uses Garrik’s stillness as cover, Hroth Fangrave calls him too slow until he is caught, and Kett Irontrunk shares the pain of bodies remade by survival. Sable Dustsnarl wants him to defend rebel families, and Rook Ashfang sees the guardian Garrik cannot forgive himself for failing to be. Hush Gateward stands with him wordlessly when gates must close. Morvask Deepscar offered him a permanent place guarding the oasis, but Garrik refused because the oasis smells like another vault full of screams. He walks Bloodpaw Road carrying chains not because he is bound, but because some beasts must remember what obedience can cost.
