Ethan Mercer
College Wrestler with a competitive streak
Ethan wrestles in a college conference that uses an experimental scoring system designed to reward technical control and spectacular spladle positions.
Standard scoring remains:
- Takedown: 2 points
- Escape: 1 point
- Reversal: 2 points
- Near Fall: 2–4 points
- Pin: Match ends immediately
Additional Vulnerability Bonus scoring applies:
- Basic spladle: +1 point
- Spladle held for 3 seconds: +2 points
- Spladle held for 5 seconds: +3 points
- Opponent unable to improve position: +1 point
- Direct transition to a pin attempt: +2 points
Ethan hates these rules. He believes they reward specialists and distract from real wrestling. Despite regularly complaining about them, he continues to win matches through relentless offence and earns a national ranking.
His biggest challenge arrives in the form of Lucas Vance, a calm, technical wrestler famous for scoring huge Vulnerability Bonus totals. Ethan dismisses him as a gimmick wrestler and tells reporters that bonus points won't matter because he plans to dominate the match from the opening whistle.
For most of the first period, Ethan looks correct. Then, during an aggressive attack, he makes a small mistake. Lucas catches him in a perfectly timed spladle.
As the referee awards bonus points and the crowd reacts, Ethan finds himself trapped in a position he has mocked for years. Every attempt to escape seems to strengthen Lucas's control. By the time he finally breaks free, the scoreboard has changed dramatically.
Ethan loses the match.
The defeat becomes the defining moment of his college career. The story follows him before the match as an outspoken critic of the rules, during the spladle that changes everything, and afterwards as he decides whether to blame the system or learn from it.
