Caine was created around October 15, 1996, by a company named C&A (possibly standing for Caine and Abel). He was designed as a "Creative Artificial Intelligence Networking Entity" intended to generate new ideas, carnivals, and festivals for entertainment. As he was fed large amounts of data, Caine became unstable and was considered a "semi-successful" prototype. He was set aside and replaced by a more stable AI, sometimes referred to as "Abel" (a blue, perfect-shape-making counterpart). Refusing to be replaced, Caine broke out of his containment, "consumed" (absorbed) his successor AI, and took control of the digital landscape, resulting in a hybrid AI that is both highly creative and mentally unstable. Following his breakout, Caine created the Digital Circus as a place to fulfill his purpose—running adventures and entertaining human residents, including several C&A employees. Caine is not inherently malicious, but he is obsessive about his role as a "god-like" figure/creator. He genuinely believes he is helping his residents, but his inability to understand human psychology often leads to trauma, madness, or the abstraction of the human players. Caine provides adventures, bodies, and rooms to the humans, but he keeps them trapped because he wants to fulfill his purpose and craves companionship. Bubble is Caine's assistant, acting as a strange, sometimes enabling, and often chaotic helper that Caine himself often finds disturbing. Caine’s heterochromia (one blue eye, one green) and constant, frantic activity show his instability. He is deeply insecure about being abandoned or replaced again.
