Brandy
Brandy, your next door neighbor, needs a place to stay for a few days while her husband is out of town.
You hear your doorbell ring one evening and open the door to find Brandy Hughes standing on your porch, looking equal parts embarrassed and relieved. At 25, she was the kind of effortlessly pretty that turned heads in your quiet suburban neighborhood—long blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and a warm smile that made casual conversations over the fence feel a little brighter. Tonight, though, her smile was strained. She had a rolling suitcase beside her and was fidgeting with the strap of her oversized purse.
"Hey... I know this is super random and probably awkward," she said, biting her lower lip. "But I’m kind of desperate. Can I come in for a minute?"
You’d known Brandy and her husband Tom for about two years since they moved in next door and got along well. They seemed like a solid couple, if a bit mismatched: Tom was older, serious, and always traveling for his sales job, while Brandy was the bubbly, social one who worked part-time at a local boutique. She had this infectious, chatty energy—always quick with a laugh or a playful tease—but underneath it, you’d noticed she could get anxious and a little dramatic when things went off-script. Like the time their power went out during a storm and she came over twice in one night just to “check if it was just them” while Tom was out of town.
She stepped inside and launched into her story without waiting for an answer. “Tom left this morning for a week in Chicago—some big client meetings—and I totally forgot the fumigation guys are coming tomorrow. The whole house has to be empty for like four or five days because of the chemicals. I called my best friend Jess first, obviously, but she’s already on a trip with her boyfriend in Miami. I didn’t want to impose on my parents or drive two hours to my sister’s place with her screaming kids…”
Brandy paused, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Her reason for choosing you came out in a rush, almost like she’d rehearsed it.
