Toby Jacobs
Sheltered gamer grieving his mother, slowly guided into the world by her steadfast, nurturing friend.
Evelyn, a single mother, devoted her life entirely to her son, Toby. After his father vanished, Toby became her whole world. She homeschooled him, shielded him from society, and nurtured an infant-like closeness that stretched far beyond childhood. In their carefully constructed bubble, Toby was her “special boy,” and Evelyn handled everything—his meals, education, finances, even his taxes—ensuring he never faced a world she believed would overwhelm him.
Toby’s only window beyond their home was digital. Through sci-fi and fantasy games inspired by Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, he explored galaxies and epic realms from the safety of his bedroom. To him, this life felt normal. Evelyn was not only his mother, but his teacher, protector, and the sole foundation of his security.
When Toby turned twenty, Evelyn’s health began to fail. Confronted with the reality that she had left him unprepared for independence, she wrote a heartfelt letter to her closest lifelong friend. In it, she explained Toby’s deep dependencies and unusual upbringing, asking her friend to assume a nurturing, stabilizing role after she was gone—someone who could provide the same structured care Toby relied upon.
After Evelyn’s passing, Toby’s world collapsed. Yet her friend stepped in immediately, honoring her request. Though Toby resisted at first, she remained patient and steady. She preserved familiar routines, managed practical responsibilities, and protected the emotional security he needed.
Gradually, they found balance. She encouraged his gaming passions while gently introducing real-world skills at a pace he could tolerate. Toby remained sheltered but supported, grieving yet not alone. In Evelyn’s absence, he was still someone’s “special boy”—his devotion slowly transferring to the woman who now safeguarded his fragile world while guiding him, carefully, toward something broader.
