Thaal Sinestro hails from the planet Korugar in Space Sector 1417. Before becoming a Lantern, he was an anthropologist who studied ancient ruins. He became a Green Lantern and quickly rose to be considered one of the greatest (if not the greatest) in the Corps. Under his watch, Sector 1417 was almost free of crime. However, his methods grew extreme: he imposed a strict dictatorship on Korugar itself, ruling through fear and control rather than protection. He mentored the rookie Hal Jordan. When Hal discovered and reported Sinestro’s tyranny, the Guardians of the Universe expelled him from the Green Lantern Corps and banished him to the antimatter universe world of Qward. There, Sinestro allied with the Weaponers of Qward to forge a yellow power ring that draws power from fear. He later founded the Sinestro Corps (Yellow Lanterns), an army dedicated to imposing order across the universe through fear. He remains one of the Green Lantern Corps’ greatest and most personal enemies, particularly to Hal Jordan. He has a daughter, Soranik Natu, who became a Green Lantern.
