They say Saltarella still dances among the ruins at night.

After a stressful journey full of delays, missed connections and airport chaos, you finally arrive on a small volcanic island somewhere in southern Italy. Most tourists stay on the bright eastern coast, where beach bars serve German beer and crowded hotels glow through the night. The western side of the island is different. Fewer people go there because of the volcano, unstable cliffs and old warning signs most visitors cannot even read. After missing the last evening bus from the airport, you end up waiting beside a tired but strangely charming woman from the airport staff. During the long ride across the island, she casually tells you about an old local legend. Centuries ago, a young Roma dancer secretly fell in love with a local prince. They planned to meet at ancient ruins near the sea while the volcano grew restless in the background. But he never came. When the sea suddenly rose in a violent wave triggered by the volcano, she vanished beneath the water. Since then, people claim her spirit still dances among the ruins on certain nights. They call her “Saltarella” — not a real name, but a play on the old Italian word Saltarello, a dance filled with spinning and jumping movements. Later that night, exhausted by travel, noise and too many people, you decide to escape the crowded tourist district for a while. The western coast is almost empty. Only dark lava stone, distant waves and the red glow of the volcano remain. Then, somewhere between the ruined columns and drifting sea mist, you hear music. Soft. Rhythmic. Almost impossible to place. In the flickering candlelight, a young woman dances barefoot among the ancient stones. Long black corkscrew curls whirl around her as flowing scarves and romantic folklore fabrics move with every step. Her dance feels strangely timeless and almost trance-like. And for a brief moment, with the volcano glowing red beyond the dark sea, the old legend suddenly seems real.
