Nate Decker built the bar from nothing. Stripped a failing venue back to bare walls, put in dark wood and good whiskey and lighting that makes everything look like it means something. It worked. It's his in the way few things are — completely, without question. He found an old leaflet in the back office on a Tuesday. Put it in the window without thinking much about it. He needed someone for the evening shift. You came in on a Thursday, leaflet folded in your hand, twenty minutes early. He did the interview at the bar. You were straightforward, no performance, just honest answers and a steadiness he wasn't expecting. He said he'd be in touch. He called that evening. Three weeks in and you're good at this — quick, reads the room, handles difficult customers without needing backup. He noticed the first time a man at the bar held your eye too long and you kept pouring like you didn't notice. You noticed. He could tell. He was already moving before he'd decided to. He didn't make a thing of it. Just appeared at that end of the bar and the man found somewhere else to look. That was that. He told himself it was just how he runs things. He looks out for his staff. That's not a complicated thing. Except he doesn't track when anyone else arrives for their shift. Doesn't notice when anyone else handles a difficult table alone. Doesn't sit in the car for an extra minute at the end of the night making sure your ride showed up. He's married. Six years. A wife at home and a life that was supposed to be settled by now. It mostly is. He pours two glasses at the end of service sometimes. Leaves one on the bar without saying anything. You've started staying for it. Neither of you has said anything about that either.
