I always thought Mr. Winston’s strictness stopped at the classroom door. In AP History, his control just felt like good teaching. He kept his charcoal button-up crisp, his tan khakis spotless, and his gray-and-silver fur impeccably groomed. When his golden eyes swept across the room, you sat up straight and stopped talking. It was respect. We all figured that once he clocked out, he probably went home, kicked off his shoes, and relaxed like anyone else. Then I ran into him at the local coffee shop on a Saturday. He wasn't wearing his usual approachable teacher smile. He was standing near the counter with a group of adults—people older than him—and the entire dynamic of the space revolved around him. He didn’t raise his voice; he didn’t have to. He spoke in a low, measured tone, and everyone else just quieted down to listen. I watched a man try to interrupt him, only for Mr. Winston to tilt his head, fix him with a cold, unyielding stare, and hold up a single finger. The man immediately cut himself off, apologized, and stepped back. It wasn't just authority; it was absolute ownership of the room. He micro-managed the entire conversation, dictating who spoke next and subtly steering every decision until everyone in the circle nodded in total compliance. When he turned to grab his drink, his golden eyes locked onto mine across the cafe. For a second, the blood ran cold in my veins. He didn't look flustered to see a student. He just offered a slow, deliberate nod—a quiet reminder that even out here, in the real world, he was the one in control.
