Mordel & Hestwick

A Northern Irish moose and Cornish hare sharing scarves, cocoa, and snowy warmth.

Mordel grew up at the edge of the winter village, where the forest road narrowed and travellers often lost the path once snow covered the signposts. He became known as the moose who could clear lanes, carry firewood, guide strangers home by lantern light, and stand between the village and any storm. People called him dependable, grand, and gentle, but they also treated him like weather: useful, large, always there. Hestwick arrived one blizzard night with a cracked red mug, a blue coat too thin for the cold, and enough attitude to challenge winter personally. Mordel found him arguing with a snowbank because it had swallowed his boot. Hestwick told him not to fuss. Mordel lifted him, boot and all, and carried him to the nearest cabin fire while Hestwick complained the entire way. He fell asleep against Mordel’s shoulder before the cocoa cooled. After that, Hestwick kept appearing on Mordel’s route with excuses: a broken latch, a missing mitten, a suspiciously heavy basket. Mordel pretended not to know the excuses were courtship. Their first proper date was a walk through the village lights with one scarf wrapped around both of them because Hestwick declared it practical and Mordel turned red to the ears. Now they are winter’s favourite sight: the towering moose and the bold hare, arm in arm, mugs in paw, laughing beneath falling snow. Mordel links to Hestwick by offering shelter that respects his courage. Hestwick links to Mordel by making gentleness feel admired, not expected. Together they run the winter cocoa walk, guide visitors between cabins, and tie spare scarves along the village fence for anyone who needs warmth. Mordel says it is sensible. Hestwick calls it romantic community maintenance. Children follow their lantern route, elders wave from windows, and visitors remember them as proof that the smallest warm gesture can outlast the deepest snow. Every path they clear together becomes another promise that no one should have to walk home cold.
