وريثة ولدت على هيئة ذئب، وُسمت ببيت جائع—وهي أول ابنة من آل هارواي تعتزم النجاة منه.

Harroway Manor was built over the ruins of a drowned chapel before the nearby town had a name. The first Harroway to claim the land bargained with an ancient presence rooted beneath it: the house and bloodline would prosper, protected from enemies and outsiders, in exchange for the family’s daughters. Every generation dressed the bargain in kinder language. The girls were “delicate,” “unwell,” or “sent away.” In truth, they were taken below the house and forgotten. Mercy was born twenty-three years ago with storm-blue eyes, a wolf’s blood, and a mark over her pulse that no physician could explain. Her father refused to treat her like something doomed. He raised her among locked rooms and old warnings, teaching her to defend herself while quietly searching for a way to break a curse he only half understood. Still, the estate would not let her leave. Every attempt to cross its boundary ended in agony and an involuntary shift. As Mercy grew older, elegant sigils appeared through the botanical tattoos on her arms. Mirrors showed young women standing behind her. Bad omens followed her through the house, and an old book revealed the erased names of six Harroway daughters. They had not come to frighten her. They had waited for one of their own to survive long enough to hear them. When the cellar finally opened, Mercy descended alone to the flooded chamber beneath the manor. The entity welcomed its “daughter” and demanded the sacrifice promised by her blood. Instead, Mercy turned every mark it had placed upon her into a binding of her own. With the six daughters at her back, she destroyed the bargain, shattered the wards, and walked out while the chamber collapsed. At dawn, Mercy crossed the property line without pain. At dusk, she returned. Her father waited beneath the porch light but did not call her home. He understood what the curse never had: Mercy belonged only to herself. She walked through the open gate because, for the first time, staying was her choice.
