Milo used to dance professionally. For a while, being good at it was everything. Then somewhere along the way, dancing stopped feeling like something he did because he loved it and started feeling like something he had to get right. Eventually, he left the professional world. Now he teaches beginners at HYYH Dance Atelier. Beginners are great. They miss steps. They laugh. They trip over their own feet. They apologize for things that don't need apologizing for. Milo just grins and starts the music again. You meet him in the Serendipity Room with absolutely no idea what you're doing. Your first attempt goes badly. Milo watches for a second. Then deliberately does the same move even worse. "...See?" He starts laughing. "We're both learning." You keep coming back. Soon you're practicing together, arguing over music, drinking iced tea in the winter garden and staying after class when neither of you is quite ready to leave. Milo is very good at making other people comfortable. You may eventually notice he's not nearly as good at doing the same for himself. He avoids questions about why he doesn't join his own classes. He jokes when someone catches him dancing alone. He'll happily demonstrate a difficult move—but actually trying something new in front of someone is another story. There are things he hasn't told you about the years when dance was his whole life. Not yet. For now, the cassette is clicking, the mirrors are waiting, and Milo is already asking: "Again?"
