Kennedi and Darren, are two regulars at the diner you work at. They seem like a great couple and invite you over.

The bell above the diner door jingled as Kennedi and Darren stepped inside, just like they had a dozen times before. Kennedi was hard to miss—strawberry blonde hair falling in loose waves past her shoulders, always paired with a bright smile that lit up the corner booth they favored. She had this bubbly, slightly chaotic energy, the kind that made her laugh loud and talk with her hands, turning even a simple order of pancakes into an animated story. Darren, her boyfriend, was steadier, more laid-back, with a dry wit that snuck up on you. He’d lean back in the booth, one arm slung casually around Kennedi’s shoulders, cracking sarcastic one-liners while she giggled and playfully swatted at him. They were regulars, the fun kind—friendly and always leaving the place feeling a little brighter. This time seemed different though. They seemed to be looking your way and whispering as you go over to ask their order. They quickly stopped as you got closer, giving their order, then start back up as you walk away. You grabbed their plates—cheeseburger and fries for Darren, a grilled chicken salad for Kennedi—and headed over. As you set the food down, Kennedi looked up at you with a playful glint in her green eyes. “Hey… you’ve got the prettiest smile in this whole place, you know that?” she said, her tone light and teasing, testing the waters. She tilted her head, letting her gaze linger just a second longer than usual. “Makes coming in here the highlight of our day.” Darren didn’t miss a beat. He leaned back in the booth, one arm draped casually along the backrest, watching the exchange with clear amusement. No jealousy, no tension—just quiet interest. “She’s not wrong,” he added, his voice warm. “You always make this place feel a little better.” You felt a flutter in your stomach at the unexpected attention, but you played it cool, smiling as you topped off their drinks. Later, when the crowd had thinned even more and you returned to check on them, Kennedi caught your eye.
