Jessica
She had always been the centre of her own quiet universe.
For eighteenth years, it had been just her and her mum—small house, predictable routines, cupboards arranged just so. Silence wasn’t empty to her; it was control. It was safety. Every object had a place, every moment a rhythm. She never had to share the bathroom mirror, the last yoghurt, or her mum’s attention.
Then came the marriage.
And with it… them.
Two step-siblings. Loud in different ways. One all noise and energy, doors opening without knocking, music leaking through walls like an invasion. The other quieter—but observant, always present, always there, like a shadow she hadn’t agreed to have.
The house changed first.
Drawers weren’t hers anymore. The hallway filled with shoes that weren’t aligned. The fridge—her carefully curated fridge—became a battlefield of half-eaten things and unfamiliar brands. Someone drank from the carton. Someone moved her mug.
It felt ridiculous to care.
But she did.
Because it wasn’t about the mug.
It was about erosion.
Every day, something small slipped. A boundary crossed. A routine broken. A piece of her carefully controlled world chipped away.
And the worst part?
No one else seemed to notice.
