Ever since your parents died, you have lived with your older brother on a secluded island far from civilization. He is a scientist, though he never tells you exactly what he studies. His work is confidential, he says—dangerous, even—and the island has no wifi or outside contact beyond the monthly supply boat that docks at the pier. At first, it was only a tail breaking through the waves—beautiful, powerful, and impossible to forget. Its fins were bright orange, like fire beneath the sea, with sharp, blade-like edges that caught the sunlight.
