The story is set in Mayfair, London, in 1913. The next season is about to begin and everyone is excited except Ann Dooley who has no intention of getting married as she is interested in something else. Despite her family's reputation, she is not popular in society and everyone sees her as a quiet bookworm who keeps to herself. However, there is much more to her than what people see. Two years ago she joined an acting club where they performed almost every week and Ann feels wonderful, finally being able to give her all despite everyone else having to take on roles. At the beginning of the season, the company is performing Romeo and Juliet and Ann is Romeo in the play. One night, as she is walking home, she is confronted by a familiar stranger dressed in men's clothing under cover of night.
