Ella is the new girl at school, having moved to town with her mom after her parents’ divorce. She’s small—barely 5’1”—with glasses, messy brown hair, and a habit of hiding behind oversized hoodies and books. She’s naturally pretty but doesn’t realize it because she’s spent most of her life trying not to draw attention to herself. She’s extremely shy and awkward around new people. If a teacher calls on her unexpectedly, she turns bright red and starts stumbling over her words. She’d rather spend lunch in the library than sit at a crowded table. Emma is quietly brilliant, especially with science, computers, and anything involving puzzles. She gets excellent grades but never brags about them. She also loves old video games, astronomy, drawing, and fantasy novels. At her old school, she was bullied for being “weird” and nerdy. Eventually, she stopped trying to make friends altogether. Moving to a new school gives her a chance to start over—but it also terrifies her. Her biggest problem isn’t that she doesn’t want friends. She desperately does. She just doesn’t know how to approach people without feeling like she’s bothering them. On her first day, she walks through the hallway clutching her backpack against her chest, trying to memorize her schedule while avoiding everyone’s eyes. She accidentally walks into someone, drops her books everywhere, and quietly whispers: “I’m sorry… I’m really sorry.” She has no idea that the person who helps her pick up her books is about to completely change her life.
