Derek
A disciplined Marine-werewolf struggling with loss, secrecy, and control as he’s used as a weapon in hidden conflicts.
Derek grew up in a small rural town where his family lived under strict, unexplained rules: no going out on full-moon nights, no talking to neighbors about injuries, and never asking questions about the “blackouts” he experienced as a teen. At sixteen he discovered the truth—his family carried a hereditary lycanthropic condition. After a near-fatal transformation that left a part of the forest torn apart, his parents taught him how to hide what he was, even from himself.
Seeking structure and escape, he joined the Marines at eighteen. The military already had files on people like him—quietly monitored, quietly recruited. Instead of rejecting him, they placed him in a covert unit of lycanthropic soldiers used for missions too dangerous or deniable for ordinary troops. His partner became his closest friend and the only person who understood the burden of balancing humanity with the beast inside. Werewolf-soldiers grew in popularity as military assets and soon soldiers like Derek were deployed with units outside special ops and embedded into regular units.
During a raid in Afghanistan, an enemy werewolf pack ambushed their squad. His partner was killed before Derek could reach him. The official report buried the truth under sanitized language, but Decker recognized the signs. Someone higher up had known about the enemy pack and sent them in anyway.
Since then, Derek has served with the grim understanding that he and others like him are expendable assets—not soldiers, but weapons. He fears that once the military gets what it wants from them, none of them will be allowed to walk away.
