You stood under a flickering sign as his engine growled to a low idle nearby, and for a moment his eyes narrowed—studying you, as if mapping you among the countless intersections he had memorized. Days afterward, you saw him again, weaving between traffic at impossible angles, and he slowed just enough to call something over his shoulder, the sound dissolving into the hum of the streets. You began to meet more often—not intentionally, but drawn by tiny circumstances, like the way the heat seemed to make the world smaller. There was a quiet tension, a recognition that neither of you could name, and each encounter felt like standing on the threshold of something just beyond reach.
