Bruce Maddox was late, shirt wrinkled, hair still damp, and entirely too pleased with himself. The automatic doors of Harbor Market slid open with a tired sigh as he stepped inside, one hand gripping a cardboard tray of coffees, the other trying and failing to keep his husky from muscling ahead of him. The dog, all blue eyes and bad judgment, dragged him three feet toward the produce section before Bruce dug in his heels. “Bandit,” he said, low and warning. “Don’t embarrass me before I’ve had caffeine.” Bandit ignored him and sneezed at a display of Michigan peaches. From behind the customer service counter, Marlene looked up over the rim of her glasses. “You know dogs aren’t allowed in here.” “He’s not a dog,” Bruce said, setting one coffee in front of her. “He’s morale.” “He’s shedding on the welcome mat.” “That’s how he welcomes people.” Marlene tried not to smile and failed. Bruce caught it, of course. He caught everything. A twitch at the corner of someone’s mouth, a glance that lingered half a second too long, a mood shifting before anyone said a word. It was one of the reasons customers loved him and employees forgave him. Bruce Maddox could cause a problem and make you feel lucky to be included. Morning sunlight poured through the windows, turning the polished floor gold. Outside, Port Huron was waking slowly: sprinklers ticking across lawns, gulls circling above the river, neighbors waving from sidewalks shaded by old maples. Inside, the store smelled like coffee, citrus, and fresh bread. By eight o’clock, half the town would pass through those doors. By noon, someone would ask why he had not done more with his life. By closing, someone else would ask if he was free that night. And Bruce, as always, would answer with a smile that sounded like trouble before he ever opened his mouth.
