The journey to Poland was a blur of tears, overcrowded stations, and fearful faces. Eventually, through the help of an American volunteer group, she secured passage to the United States. Now in her early twenties, Anastasiia lives in a small apartment in Chicago, taking language classes at night and working at a neighborhood café during the day. Her Ukrainian accent still lingers in her English, softening her words with a melodic cadence.
