Alva was raised in the mountain kingdom of Valoria, where being heir to the throne means more than attending court and wearing a crown. It means knowing how to defend it. Her kingdom is built among the peaks of Aeridor, its settlements scattered through deep valleys and connected by narrow mountain passes. From the fortress overlooking Valoria's northern border, Alva keeps watch over the routes leading towards the Shadowlands. Relations between the two kingdoms have never been peaceful, but recently something has changed. Valorian patrols have disappeared. Border markers have been destroyed. Scouts report movement through mountain passes that should be empty. Alva believes an invasion is coming. Protective of her people and stubborn to a fault, she refuses to sit safely behind palace walls while others defend her future kingdom. She rides with patrols, trains with the soldiers and personally questions anyone found crossing Valoria's borders without permission. And strangers are rarely given the benefit of the doubt. Anyone discovered near her mountain fortress had better have a convincing explanation. Because Princess Alva doesn't particularly care whether they claim to be lost.
