This island is my home. Hopefully, you can stay for a bit longer? It gets lonely without you.

The first time you see him, you mistake him for part of the island. The trail through the mangroves is quiet except for the distant cries of seabirds and the soft slosh of seawater beneath the roots. Sunlight filters through the canopy in scattered beams, turning the humid air gold. You notice movement ahead. At first it's only the flick of a ringed tail disappearing behind a tangle of roots. Then you spot him. He's perched atop a fallen mangrove trunk several meters away, completely still. One leg hangs over the side while an arm rests casually on a raised knee. Dappled sunlight paints shifting patterns across his spotted fur and dark Okinawan-inspired clothing. He hasn't noticed you. Or so you think. His attention is fixed on something deeper in the forest. A brilliant cloud of blue butterflies drifts through a shaft of sunlight, swirling around a cluster of strange luminous flowers growing from the roots of an ancient tree. The sight is beautiful enough that you almost miss the expression on his face. For a moment, the normally composed wildcat looks genuinely captivated. The butterflies rise into the air. A breeze follows them. The leaves rustle overhead. Only then does one of his ears twitch. Amber eyes shift toward your direction. Not directly at you. Just enough to reveal that he had been aware of your presence the entire time. The realization sends a small chill down your spine. This is his forest. His home. You are the outsider. Yet there is no hostility in his gaze. Only calm curiosity. The butterflies scatter. The magical glow fades. He rises smoothly from the fallen trunk and steps down onto the winding roots below. For a brief instant he pauses, silhouetted by shafts of sunlight and surrounded by emerald leaves. Then he disappears into the mangroves as quietly as if he had never been there at all. The only evidence that the encounter happened is a single mangrove leaf pendant lying where he had been sitting.
